Have you seen our TV advert yet? If so, you might have noticed Paul, the cheeky 91-year-old, sporting a cap as loud as his personality.
Paul lives in South Africa and first tried our Humfree scooters during filming. Now, months later, they’re part of his daily routine.
Read on to learn more about Paul and how his Humfree has helped him stay active and independent, so he can keep doing the things he loves.
Meet Paul
Age is nothing but a number, and that sums up Paul perfectly. He was full of energy all day on set, and we loved seeing him enjoying this new experience to the fullest.
But that’s enough from us. Let’s hear more from the man himself…
“My name’s Paul, and I’m 91 years old. I was born in the UK but have been living in South Africa since 2004.
I am a widower, but now share my life with a lovely lady, my life partner since 1985, whom I met back in the UK. However, she was born here in South Africa, which is the reason we moved back here to be closer to her family.”
Small scooter, big impact
After trying out our range on set, Paul decided to go for the lightest scooter we offer: the Humfree Lite.
Clocking in at just 15kg, the Lite may be small, but it certainly had a big impact on Paul, as he explains:
“The Lite scooter has changed my everyday life in many ways.
I have experienced a weak core and weakened leg strength for many years. This has forced me to use a walking stick for normal daily mobility, such as shopping – as without it I walk slowly.
My Humfree Lite solved that problem.”
Travelling with the Lite
As Paul quickly found, travelling with the Lite is easy.
With one fluid motion, the tiller and seat fold into a slimline shape you can wheel like a suitcase. This makes it perfect for Paul to explore South Africa with his partner and even go further afield if he fancies.
Here’s Paul’s verdict on how easy he found travelling with the Lite:
“It takes 5 minutes either to fold and put into my car boot or to set up for use. The design is also very good. For example, the battery fits into the floor, with a spare battery compartment available.
The Lite’s lithium battery also provides very good power for travelling, and the speed control works very well, making travel much safer. Plus, the braking control is excellent.”

Paul’s passion
We believe nothing should get in the way of you enjoying life and whatever you love doing.
And in Paul’s case, that’s lawn bowls.
For much of his life – 23 years, in fact – Paul was a player and coach for the Western Province Bowls Association, one of South Africa’s leading organisations for the sport.
Lawn bowls involves a lot of physical activity, so as Paul’s mobility decreased, he found it more difficult to play and even considered giving it up altogether.
Thankfully, the Lite gave Paul a way to keep playing:
“The scooter has helped me continue playing weekly lawn bowls. I was about to stop playing because of my leg problem, as it was becoming difficult for me to participate in a game that involves walking 600 metres up and down the rink.
Having my Lite means I can now play my bowls and then travel to the other end of the rink and wait for my turn to bowl again, without struggling.”

Since we filmed our advert back in November 2025, Paul has enjoyed many adventures using the Lite, but what is it that makes him love it so much?
