Everyday freedom. Travelling wherever you want. The ability to do more of what you love.

A car and a mobility scooter share many similarities, but the one thing they don’t have in common is the need for a driver’s licence.

While you may not need to do all the fiddly work of getting a licence for most mobility scooters, it’s still important to know how to ride your scooter safely and legally.

Read on for everything you need to know.

Key takeaways:

  • You don’t need a UK driving licence to ride a Class 2 or Class 3 mobility scooter.
  • Mobility scooter users must follow the rules in The Highway Code.
  • Mobility scooters are intended for people with a disability, injury, medical condition, or mobility issue that affects their ability to walk.

Do I need a mobility scooter licence?

The short answer – no.

But don’t just hit the brakes yet. Before you drive your scooter for the first time, it’s important to know just how it works.

This is where we come in.

During our free home demo, our friendly scooter experts will show you the ropes. They’ll take you through every stage of the driving process, so you feel 100% confident if you purchase – you’ll even get a fancy certificate at the end of it.

What vehicles need a driver’s licence?

Cars and vans may be an obvious one. But did you know you need a licence for motorbikes, motor tricycles, and quad bikes?

Unclassified mobility scooters also require a licence.

At Humfree, you don’t have to worry about the fiddly and long process. Our mobility scooters are Class 2 models. Meaning, you don’t need to book a test.

What do I need to know when driving?

Getting to grips with something new – especially like driving – can be overwhelming.

Before you get out there, we recommend you understand the mobility scooter laws and rules, so you can feel your most confident.

We’ve pulled together a handy guide here, but you can contact our UK-based support team for any driving questions and concerns.

The Highway Code

There’s not an ‘official’ test, but the UK still requires you to learn the Highway Code to keep safe on the road.

We’ve broken down some of the key rules below, but for more detail, head over to gov.uk

  • Class 2 vehicles have an upper speed limit of 4mph and are designed for pavement use.
  • Class 3 vehicles have an upper speed limit of 8 mph and are designed for both pavement and road use.
  • Pavements are safer than roads and should be used when available.
  • You should give pedestrians priority.
  • Scooters MUST NOT travel faster than 4mph on pavements or in pedestrian areas.
  • When moving off the pavement onto the road, you should take special care.
  • Before moving off, always look around and make sure it’s safe to join the traffic.
  • Always try to use dropped kerbs when moving off the pavement.

Rules only for Class 3 mobility scooters

  • You MUST follow the same rules about using lights, indicators and horns as for other road vehicles.
  • Take extra care at road junctions.
  • All normal parking restrictions should be observed.
  • These vehicles MUST NOT be used on motorways.

What else do I need to drive a mobility scooter?

Disabled or have poor mobility? Then you’re all good to ride. Mobility scooters are intended for people who have difficulty walking because of a disability, injury, or medical condition.

You must also be able to read a car’s registration number from 12.3m or 40 feet away. This is really important to know, as there’s a risk of prosecution if you’re unable to do so.

If you have a Class 3 mobility scooter, you may have to register it with the DVLA before using it on the road. This is easier than you think. Simply fill out an application form and provide evidence that the vehicle is either new or used.

You don’t need insurance for either a Class 2 or Class 3 mobility scooter – but it is advised.

With Humfree, we offer a two-year warranty, giving you peace of mind. We can help with servicing, parts, repairs, maintenance, and much more. You can find out more by contacting our customer support team.
